Navigate the Treatment Details

Bellafill is an FDA-approved dermal filler used by medical professionals to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, scars and other signs of aging. Allergy skin testing prior to Bellafill treatment is not required by Health Canada. However, it is important to be aware of the potential risks associated with any type of injection.

  • Since Bellafill contains bovine collagen capsulated in PMMA microspheres, possible side effects associated with Bellafill are redness, swelling, itching and tenderness at the injection site. Serious but rare side effects can include infection, scarring or granulomas (clumps of inflammatory cells). To minimize these risks, it is recommended that people who are considering Bellafill allergy skin testing discuss their plans with their healthcare providers. Moreover, we used a blunt cannula to inject Bellafill to minimize any possible side effect
  • People who have a history of severe allergic reactions may be more likely to experience a reaction after Bellafill treatment. Those with allergies or a previous allergic reaction should speak to their healthcare provider about whether pre-treatment testing for allergies should be done before undergoing treatment with Bellafill.
  • Allergy skin testing for Bellafill involves pricking the skin to introduce tiny amounts of allergens beneath the surface and then watching for any visible signs of an allergic reaction, such as redness, swelling or itching in that area. If an allergic reaction occurs during this test, then treatment with Bellafill should not be performed because there could be a risk of anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction).
  • In addition to allergy skin testing prior to treatment, your healthcare provider will assess your medical history and perform a physical exam before administering any injections. During this time, you should discuss all concerns that you may have about treatment options and potential side effects so that you can make informed decisions about which treatments are best for you. It is also important to tell your healthcare provider about any medications that you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription drugs, in order to avoid potential drug interactions.

By being aware of the potential risks associated with any type of injection therapy and taking precautions such as allergy skin testing prior to treatment, people can safely take advantage of the many benefits offered by products like Bellfill without worrying about having an adverse reaction.

Health Canada waived the skin test requirement

Bellafill is an FDA-approved dermal filler that is composed of bovine collagen and polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) microspheres. It was approved by Health Canada in 2014 for the correction of nasolabial folds, or smile lines. It has also recently been approved for the treatment of acne scars. Bellafill has a high rate of both efficacy and safety, with rare side effects being reported. However, according to Health Canada, a Bellafill allergy skin test is not required before undergoing treatment because it is highly purified and does not contain any substances that are known to cause allergies or sensitivities in patients. In addition, Health Canada states that there have been no reports of allergies or sensitivities related to Bellafill treatments when used according to the approved instructions provided by Allergan. Therefore, while it’s always important to follow the instructions provided by your doctor, a Bellafill allergy skin test isn’t necessary when considering this type of treatment option.
