How Does Coolsculpting Work?

Coolsculpting, in simple terms, freezes fat away. The treatment itself is a method of fat removal called cryolipolysis.

When you go in for the procedure, the practitioner will use a device that vacuums your problem area's skin into an applicator. From there, the device will use freezing temperatures to free the fat cells beneath the skin, causing them to die. Most people report a cooling sensation, but the cold numbs the skin so that you don't feel pain. Many people bring their laptops with them to their appointment so that they can work while getting Coolsculpting!

Most procedures take an hour or less. The procedure doesn't damage your skin or muscles, meaning that there's no recovery time. Around three months after the procedure, your body will get rid of the fat cells. You'll lose an average of 20% fat from the treated area and can have multiple treatments.

Some of the areas that people use Coolsculpting on include their thighs, belly, sides, and lower back. These are often areas that are hard to improve through exercise alone. It also works for people under their chin and can even remove cellulite from your legs, arms, and buttocks.

The best part about Coolsculpting is that the results last!

Is Coolsculpting Safe?

Coolsculpting doesn't require any cuts, medication, or anesthesia, making it non-invasive and safe. In one study involving over 1,200 patients, less than 1% of them had any adverse side effects, and those complications were minor compared to other procedures. The most common problem experienced by that small number of patients was a lack of feeling in the affected area, and it was a temporary problem. Others reported red skin, mild swelling, and minor localized pain. These symptoms were not long-term.

In fact, Coolsculpting has a lower reported rate of adverse side effects than liposuction and other popular procedures. If you're looking for a safe procedure to help your trouble areas, it's hard to imagine a better treatment.

Some people shouldn't get Coolsculpting. The treatment isn't recommended for obese patients, as the technique is meant to remove small amounts of body fat in trouble areas. It is also not recommended for those with cryoglobulinemia, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, or cold agglutinin disease.

If you're worried about safety, Coolsculpting is the way to go. With that said, if you have any concerns, you should schedule a free consultation to find out more information about the procedure.

Before Your Treatment

Before your treatment, the practitioner will make sure that you're a candidate. Ideal candidates for the procedure have subcutaneous fat (fat that you can pinch with your hand). They'll also make sure that you don't have one of the diseases listed above.

You should also make sure that you have realistic expectations going into the procedure. Everyone has different goals, and yours should line up with what Coolsculpting can accomplish. It is not a way to lose 100 pounds. The treatment helps remove resistant fat and should not be a substitute for a healthy lifestyle.

You should also plan on spending an hour in the facility. Your treatment may not take that long, but it's best to plan a little extra time, especially if this will be your first appointment.

During Your Treatment

At the beginning of your treatment, you may experience pulling, tugging, mild pinching, intense cold, tingling, stinging, aching, and cramping at the treatment site. These symptoms are usually reported as being mild, but it's best to know that they may occur. After the cold numbs your skin, these feelings will subside and go away.

Most people that get the treatment end up on their phones or computers doing work or texting friends. The procedure is more boring than painful.

You can also get multiple spots treated during the same visit if you choose.

After Your Treatment

After you're finished with your Coolsculpting treatment, you can go about your day as normal. Since you aren't under anesthesia, you can drive yourself home, go back to work, or hit the town with friends. Your body begins to naturally process and get rid of the fat cells. Patients should expect to see a 20-25% reduction in fat after 1-3 months in the treated area.

After your treatment, you may experience some temporary redness, swelling, tingling, numbness, aching, or bruising. These effects are temporary and minor in 99% of patients. The other 1% will experience these symptoms to a stronger degree, but even then, they are temporary. A study in 2015 found no serious complications of the treatment, only minimal discomfort that didn't last for long.

It's important to note that Coolsculpting is not meant to tighten your skin around your trouble areas. It's recommended that you look into laser treatments and other options if you'd like to pursue that as well.

What To Look For From A Coolsculpting Facility

There are a few things that you should consider when choosing a facility to have Coolsculpting done. The first thing you should look at is the staff.

Make sure that the staff and doctor are qualified to attend to your needs. They should be able to answer any questions you have and listen to your concerns. They should also have proper training and experience in the procedure.

You'll want to find a location that offers a free consultation with the person who does Coolsculpting work on you. You should talk to the practitioner so that they can evaluate you and vice versa. Find someone that's patient, take the time to know you and your expectations, and that makes you feel comfortable.

Look at their customer reviews. Are the majority of their customers satisfied? Would they recommend the service to family and friends, and would they go back for another treatment? Every business will have one or two bad reviews, but the majority of them should be positive. You should also look for trends within the reviews. Do the negative ones all point to one issue? If so, ask the clinic about that problem and see if they've taken steps to fix the problem.

Try to find a facility that has several different procedures as well. Once you find a practitioner that you trust, you'll want to use them for other procedures. Why go somewhere else for laser treatments, botox, Coolsculpting, and more when you can use the same doctor and build up a professional relationship with that person? You'll save time and have the peace of mind that you're in good hands.

Another benefit of a facility that offers several services is that they'll know what you need and be able to develop a plan that meets your needs. They can recommend laser treatments, skin tightening, and Coolsculpting as part of a complete treatment plan, and you can often get everything done during the same visit!

You should also find out about the equipment they use. With the rapid pace of technology, procedures that rely on old equipment are often outdated and not as effective as you'd like. Look for a facility with the latest cutting edge technology. You should also ask about their procedures. Do they take the time to research new procedures and implement them?

Once you find a facility with all these things, you can rest easy knowing that you're in good hands. It might seem like a lot, but the results you'll see will make the time you spend doing research worth the trouble.
