Comprehensive Guide to CO2 Fractional Laser Preparation and Aftercare
Fractional CO₂ laser resurfacing is an effective treatment for reducing fine lines, improving skin texture, and fading scars. However, it’s essential to note that, like any medical procedure, there are potential risks and side effects associated with it. While the procedure itself happens in the clinic, much of your outcome depends on how you prepare and care for your skin before and after treatment. The following guide summarises key recommendations to help you heal comfortably and achieve the best possible results.

Preparation
Proper preparation begins weeks in advance. The steps you take ahead of time improve your comfort, reduce your risk of complications and set the stage for a smooth recovery.
Consultation
- Book a consultation to review your medical history, assess your skin and discuss the best treatment plan.
- Inform your provider about any conditions such as cold sores, eczema or skin sensitivities.
Sun Protection
- Minimise sun exposure for at least two weeks before your appointment. Apply a broad‑spectrum SPF 30 or higher daily, even on cloudy days.
- Wear wide‑brimmed hats and protective clothing outdoors and avoid tanning beds or self‑tanners.
Medication and Supplements
- Avoid blood‑thinning medications such as aspirin and ibuprofen for one week prior (check with your doctor if you take them regularly).
- Discontinue retinoids and other exfoliating products seven to ten days before treatment to reduce skin sensitivity.
Day‑of Instructions
- Do not consume alcohol or smoke within 48–72 hours of your appointment.
- Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and arrive with clean skin free of makeup, lotions or perfumes.
- Stay well‑hydrated, remove any jewellery near the treatment area and wear comfortable clothing.
- Bring a hat and sunglasses to protect your skin when you leave the clinic.

After Care
Your skin will be sensitive and require extra care following a CO₂ laser session. Healing typically progresses through distinct stages, and the recommendations below outline what to expect and how to manage each phase.
Immediate Aftercare (First 48 Hours)
- Expect a sunburn‑like sensation with redness, swelling or mild discomfort. Use cool compresses of water‑soaked gauze to soothe your skin.
- Apply a thin layer of a healing ointment (Aquaphor, CeraVe healing ointment or similar) as directed by your provider. Keep your skin moist at all times—never let it feel tight or dry.
- Avoid heat sources such as hot showers, saunas or steam rooms and skip strenuous exercise. Light activity is fine, but anything that increases your heart rate or causes sweating should be postponed.
- Do not expose your skin to sunlight. Stay indoors or wear protective coverings if you must go outside.
- Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated and a clean towel over your pillow to protect bedding from ointment.
Days 1–3
- Continue cold compress soaks four times daily followed by ointment to keep the skin hydrated.
- Avoid scrubbing, rubbing or picking at flaking skin. Gently dab any crusts with wet gauze to remove them.
- Keep spritzing your face with thermal spring water or sterile saline to calm irritation and support healing.
- Use artificial tears and a petroleum‑free lip balm if your eyes or lips feel dry.
Days 4–5
- Begin cleansing the treated area using a mild, non‑foaming facial cleanser. Pat—not rub—your skin dry with a clean, soft towel.
- Apply a thin layer of ointment after washing. You may gently shampoo your hair if needed.
- Continue to avoid hot environments and exercise. Keep sun exposure to a minimum.
Day 7 and Beyond
- Most patients can return to normal daily activities by the end of the first week, but the skin will remain sensitive.
- Begin applying a mineral‑based sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) every morning. Reapply every two hours when outdoors.
- Makeup is usually permitted once peeling has stopped and there are no raw areas, but confirm with your provider first.
- Avoid direct sun exposure for at least a month. Wear wide‑brimmed hats, sunglasses and protective clothing whenever you are outside.
- Continue moisturising liberally with fragrance‑free products to support skin regeneration.
Weeks 1–2
- Use only gentle cleansers, moisturisers and sunscreen. Delay reintroducing products containing retinoids, vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid or other active ingredients until your provider approves.
- Continue to monitor your skin for any unusual signs—severe pain, persistent swelling, pus or changes in colour warrant a call to your clinic.
- Protect your investment in your skin by staying consistent with sun protection and hydration.
Things to Avoid
- Do not participate in strenuous physical activities, weightlifting or intense exercise for at least one week; wait two weeks before resuming workouts.
- Avoid hot tubs, saunas and steam rooms until any redness has subsided.
- Refrain from using skin‑care products with active ingredients (retinoids, alpha‑ and beta‑hydroxy acids, vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide) for two weeks or until advised otherwise.
- Stay away from dusty or polluted environments that may irritate healing skin.
