Nasolabial folds are dynamic anatomical feature when compiend with high cheek and tight skin. However, with age, facial fat tends to sink and we develop permanent laugh lines.

A lot of people believe that laughing often improves your health and helps you live longer. At the same time, you could develop laugh lines which could naturally make you look older. Contradicting, right?

We spoke with Aesthetic consultant Dr. Kamal Al Hallak to explain all we need to know about laugh lines: What are the causes? How can you remove laugh lines? Can we get rid of them without having to stop laughing?

What are laugh lines, and how do they come about?

Smile lines are wrinkles or creases that run the side of the nose to the corner of the mouth. Dr. Kamal (Pharmacist with Ph.D) says these wrinkles can come in the form of the nasolabial crease and the nasolabial fold.

They usually occur through the constant movement of your face. It could be by smiling, laughing, or frowning. Other factors like smoking, genetics, or aging could all contribute to or cause it. Exposure to sun, lack of sleep and stress are other causes of these pesky creases,” .

How to get rid of them

There are several ways to prevent, delay, or get rid of laugh lines. While some stick to exercising the facial muscles, others make use of oils (coconut), lemon juice or moisturizers. For some people, medication is the way to go. There is also the team natural, who stick to the natural options available to them.

“It’s about what you’re comfortable with, what works for you as well as what you can afford,” he says.

Let’s take a holistic view at some of the most common and effective options available to you.

Botox is a non-surgical cosmetic treatment used to smooth out wrinkles. It is best suited for the lines that appear near the eyes. The botulinum toxin temporarily paralyzes the underlying muscles that cause folds and wrinkles. It does this by stopping signals from nerve cells getting to the muscles, which result in a lack of contraction.

Dr. Kamal (a Pharmacist with doctorate) says the common areas for Botox are the Crow’s feet, forehead, and Glabella (frown lines). And they all have distinct Botox injection patterns.

You will begin to notice results after some days, and the line-smoothing will remain for about 3 to 6 months. But it depends on how fast you metabolize Botox,” he says.

Injectable Fillers

The use of injectable fillers is a non-surgical approach which involves the use of fillers.

These fillers, which are usually made from hyaluronic acid, are injected on the lines or folds to get rid of them. The effect is usually almost immediate and can last more than 6 months in some cases.”

It is also reversible, which means that you can make changes and adjustments if you don’t like the result. There are, however, few side effects like allergic reactions and headache. Always work with a qualified dermatologist who understands the procedure very well. Fillers can be temporary such as juvederm and restylane or permanent such as Bellafill

Thread facelift

This approach help mainly with jowl sulcus and nasolabial folds.

Are there other ways to fix laugh lines aide needles?

You could try exfoliation with a chemical exfoliant. But the process may not necessarily remove laugh lines, but they help smooth your skin. Apply warm water on your face before applying the exfoliant. Also, rinse with warm water afterward

Creams (Skincare)

This is an effective and affordable option to get rid of nasolabial folds. Dr. Kamal ( Pharmacist with Ph.D.) says that retinol lotions break down radicals that can cause laugh lines. Other creams that contain vitamin C, peptides, and antioxidants can be effective too.

Surgery offers you a more long-lasting result but comes with risks. Recovery time from an invasive treatment like facelift depends on the patient, but swelling reduces within the first ten days after surgery.

Are there Natural and Preventive Options?

Yes! We’ve established earlier that aging causes laugh lines, and aging is inevitable, right? So, it means that nasolabial folds may also be inevitable. Indeed, certain factors that aren’t associated with aging can also cause laugh lines,” Dr kamal says.

He went on to say that you can prevent these wrinkles from developing by changing your lifestyle, eating right, and getting enough rest.

Dr kamal recommends:

  • Eating right

We can never overemphasize the benefits of a balanced diet. It doesn’t only keep you healthy; it also keeps your skin in good condition at all times. Make a conscious effort to eat foods that have good nutritional value.

These vitamins, mineral, and proteins help your skin to stay smooth. Apples, berries, broccoli, chicken, carrot, fish, beef, and olive oil are good examples.

  • Staying hydrated (drink a lot of water)

Your skin needs to be constantly moisturized to maintain softness and smoothness. Water can provide this much-needed moisture. At least eight cups of water daily will do your skin a world of good and keep it wrinkle-free.

  • Exercising, sleeping and relaxing

Indeed, sometimes, you can’t avoid stress. However, you can do well to manage it. Plan yourself in such a way that there will always be time for you to rest and relax. A good night sleep (at least 6-8 hours) helps to refresh your body, which prevents smile lines.

You should also watch your sleeping position, as sleeping on your side can give you the lines you’re trying to avoid! It is best to sleep on your back in this regard. Exercising, massage, yoga, and meditation can all help you relax. They also have good effects on your skin.

Yes, laughing and staying happy have its benefits. But, when they result in wrinkles that you do not particularly appreciate, the above tips will come in handy.

If you have laugh line and want to get rid of them, consult a dermatologist or surgeon before engaging in any of the procedures. They will advise you on the best treatment plan.
